Game of the Year 2021 Returnal

Returnal Gets PS5 Pro Enhanced Patch

To celebrate the fourth anniversary of Returnal, Housemarque has released a PS5 Pro patch for the game. While Sony’s enhanced console has been on the market for a few months already, Returnal is one of the few first-party games that didn’t get any upgrade which took advantage of the console’s power, until now.

While details are scarce on exactly what technical aspects of the game have been changed (since there are no patch notes or blog post), the official social media accounts claim that Returnal now runs at 2.5X the pixels on the PS5 Pro.

We know that Returnal runs at 1440p on the base PS5 and uses temporal checkerboard upscaling to reach 4K. The new update might push that 1440p resolution to something in the 1700p range. This will then be upscaled to 4K. We don’t know if the game is using PSSR to upscale its resolution because again, there are no patch notes.

At launch, Returnal was a heavy GPU game and its goal to run at 60FPS meant sacrificing the native resolution for a higher frame rate. While a 120Hz mode would have been a better addition to this upgrade, it is nice to see the four-year-old game get some love after all this time.

You can now update the game on PS5 Pro to take advantage of the increased resolution.
