Riot Games has been hard at work on its League of Legends fighting game codenamed Project L for a few years now. The company recently unveiled the official title of the game, 2XKO, as well as a targeted 2025 release window. Alongside the announcement, the studio dropped a trailer showcasing new gameplay as well as some familiar characters from the League of Legends universe.
2XKO is set to launch sometime in 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC – at least, that’s the targeted release window, according to Riot Games. The gameplay is 2v2 tag-based and features a roster of characters from League of Legends. “Overall, we’re building an always evolving fighting game for the FGC, and there’s so much to be excited for, but there’s also a lot we sill have to figure out, and so that’s where we’re going to need your help,” said 2XKO executive producer Tom Cannon.
A playable demo of 2XKO will be made available around the world this year including Evo Japan in April, where attendees can get their hands on the title.
As you can imagine, the name change hasn’t gone down well with most players. Looking under the comments section of the YouTube trailer, you’ll find a lot of fans unhappy with the change from the more memorable Project L to 2XKO. “Not gonna lie, the placeholder name is better. If you can’t even know how to pronounce a name at a glance, I don’t know. Someone thought this up and someone approved it, and both were paid to do so,” reads one comment.
Another reads, “Project L team, I have been insanely excited for this game to come out and want nothing but success from it. Ya’ll gotta change the name. It’s not too late. 2XKO is terrible and it’s going to be a marketing nightmare.” Our favourite comment is, “Who let Elon Musk choose the name?”
