Rise of the Ronin, the PS5 exclusive open-world action RPG from Nioh developer Team Ninja, now has a free demo on the PlayStation Network for players to try out before deciding if they should purchase the game. It offers a vertical slice of the action RPG to let players get a sense of the combat, platforming and RPG decision-making that’s crucial to the story.
The free demo for Rise of the Ronin lets players experience the battle with Gonzo. In this section, players have to hunt down the bandit leader, slaughter some tough enemies along the way and make key decisions that will impact the rest of the narrative. This is a great introduction to Rise of the Ronin‘s RPG choice-making systems and how it might affect the rest of your story. Choosing to kill Gonzo will lock you out of a bit of storytelling but spare him and he’ll become a valuable ally later in the game.
Rise of the Ronin has plenty of moments where making choices changes the trajectory of the story. While it’s not major deviations in the narrative like we’ve seen in The Witcher 3 or the Mass Effect series, it’s still a nice addition to the game. This is the first time that Team Ninja has explored this kind of storytelling since the Nioh games and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty were more action-oriented experiences.
The official description of Rise of the Ronin reads:
“Embark on an epic journey across war-torn 19th-century Japan in this combat-focused open-world action RPG from Team Ninja, the veteran studio behind Nioh and Ninja Gaiden. Japan, 1863. After three centuries of the Tokugawa Shogunate’s reign, the Black Ships of the West descend upon the nation’s borders and the country falls into a state of turmoil. Amidst the chaos of war, disease and political unrest, a nameless warrior forges their own path, holding the very fate of Japan in their hands.”
Rise of the Ronin is available exclusively on PS5. Have a look at our full review if you’re still on the fence about picking it up.
