Rockstar’s Agent seems to have moved from development hell to abandoned as its status update on the US Patent and Trademark Office now reads “DEAD/APPLICATION/Refused/Dismissed or Invalidated.”

Rockstar first announced Agent at E3 in 2009 during Sony’s press conference as a PlayStation 3 exclusive. It would be an espionage game around the “darkest hours” of the 1970s. Over the past decade we’ve heard scant little about Rockstar’s Agent; in May 2011 Take-Two announced that the game is still in development. In December 2015 a Rockstar employee reportedly leaked screenshots of the game on Reddit, and in August 2017 concept art was leaked on Twitter.

In July 2013 Take-Two re-registered Rockstar’s Agent trademarks, and on 19 November 2018 it received a Notice of Abandonment (news via Gamespot). You can check out the official document here.

Abandoned because no Statement of Use or Extension Request timely filed after Notice of Allowance was issued.

A quick look at Agent’s document history on the US Patent and Trademark Office website shows that Take-Two filed for leave of extension to use the trademark twice, the last in April this year. Applicants has to file for extension every six months, and is limited to a total of five extensions. Take-Two failed to apply for Agent’s third extension which was due in October 2018.

Rockstar and Take-Two could’ve decided to abandon the title “Agent” but they might still plan to develop a spy thriller but under a different title.

Rumours also recently surfaced that Rockstar might be working on Bully 2 now that Red Dead Redemption 2 is released. However, the only confirmed project is Red Dead Online with a planned beta release for November.
