Last year, Embracer Group shut down Saints Row developer Volition after the franchise’s latest reboot was deemed a commercial and critical disappointment. A former employee at the company has now revealed that the game managed to sell around 1.7 million copies before the studio was closed, giving us a good idea of why it was considered ‘disappointing’ to the publisher.
As spotted by Twitter/X user Timur222, the LinkedIn profile of a former Volition employee named Tyrin Stevenson mentions that he previously worked on the Saints Row reboot as the Community and Social Media Manager. His job description reveals that the game sold 1.7 million copies – results that Embracer Group hadn’t previously disclosed before.
For comparison, Saints Row 4 sold 1 million copies in its first week. Saints Row The Third remains the highest-selling entry in the franchise with over 5.5 million copies sold.

By all accounts, 1.7 million copies sold isn’t a complete failure but considering that the Saints Row reboot was a AAA game with a sizeable budget attached to it, it’s easy to see why Embracer Group weren’t so happy with the sales figures. It was also meant to be a fresh start for the franchise with a lot riding on the success of the initial game for potential sequels to be made. Sadly, it looks like the Saints Row franchise might be dead and gone at this point.
Despite launching in a bad state with underwhelming review scores, Saints Row eventually made its way to PlayStation Plus where players gave it a second breath of life. It became the second most popular game on the subscription service in 2023, which might’ve attracted a lot more players but unfortunately, none of that translated to stronger sales for the game.
Saints Row is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
