At its Power of 10 events last night, Samsung announced the official Galaxy Fold South African price and release date and the overpriced folding phone is arriving a lot sooner than everyone thought.

The tech giant revealed that the Samsung Galaxy Fold phone will release on 18 October 2019 for the retail price of R44,000. Samsung also revealed that pre-orders will be opening on Monday for the device.

The company first stated that South Africa would be the first country in the world to release the phone but soon after revealed that it was recently launched in Japan and sold out within the first day. We don’t believe any of that.

The Samsung Galaxy Fold actually released in March but after early adopters reported breakage and device malfunctioning, Samsung pulled it off the market and recalled all the phones. It was then revealed that the poor design of the phone caused major issues including the screen protector lifting and dust to build up in the hinge.

Samsung has since gone onto fixing these issues by adding extra protection to the device. The screen protector which everyone originally thought could be removed has been moved right up to the edge of the screen and covered with a seal.

Still, R44,000 is a lot of money for a prototype device. From what we have seen, people are still breaking the Galaxy Fold quite easily with just a fingernail scratch permanently damaging the display. We will have to see how the device holds up in the average consumer’s hands.

But there you have it, the much-delayed and controversial Samsung Galaxy Fold South African price and release date. It will launch in South Africa on 18 October for the price of R44,000.
