Rare has announced that Sea of Thieves has surpassed 40 million players since its launch back in 2018. Keep in mind that this isn’t 40 million active players. Instead, this number represents the players who have all tried out the game.
In a letter to fans, game producer Joe Neate says even before the launch of the PS5 version, this milestone is a big deal.
“As I’m sure you can imagine, when it comes to Sea of Thieves my days are full of numbers. Development costs, active servers, days until the next update… Sometimes, though, a truly extraordinary number stands out – a number like 40 million, which I’m incredibly pleased to say is the number of pirates who’ve now set sail in Sea of Thieves! 40 million players across Xbox, Windows 10 and Steam is an amazing milestone to be able to talk about, and of course, it wouldn’t have happened without you – our brilliant, positive and welcoming community, who continue to surprise and impress us with your creativity and antics out on the waves”
Sea of Thieves launches next week for PS5 which opens up room for even more growth in the game. The game will also get its Season 12 content at the same time meaning there’s reason for older gamers to return to the seas.
I played the Sea of Thieves beta this past weekend and enjoyed it. While the game doesn’t explain anything and lacks a decent “catch-up” system, it is a day/night difference compared to the product that launched back in 2018.
