Everything (and more) That You Should Know Before Watching The Sandman

Sexual Abuse Allegations Rise Against ‘The Sandman’ Author Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman, the author behind The Sandman, Coraline, and American Gods, is facing some controversial allegations of sexual assault. The reports span multiple decades and countries, as Gaiman has been accused of unwanted sexual contact by multiple women.

Detailed accounts have come forward by eight women in total, including Scarlett Pavlovich, a former babysitter for Gaiman’s child. Pavlovich claims she was asked to babysit Gaiman’s young son in New Zealand. During one incident, she was invited by Gaiman to bathe in a garden tub where he joined her uninvited and sexually assaulted her.

Pavlovich says these incidents carried on over time and escalated to more degrading acts. One incident saw Gaiman attempt non-consensual anal sex.

Another accuser, by the name of Caroline, worked at Gaiman’s New York property. She claims that he initiated unwanted sexual contact while his child was present. In another account, Kendra Stout says that Gaiman raped her during a trip to Cornwall. At the time, Kendra claims she refused Gaiman multiple times and even had a UTI, which she informed him about.

Neil Gaiman has since denied all these allegations. He claims that all reports are true but that every interaction was consensual. His representatives have framed these acts as BDSM and part of the kink. However, all the women claim they had no prior discussions about consent or boundaries.

Pavlovich, the babysitting incident, claimed to have stayed in contact with Gaiman after signing an NDA and being paid $9,200 in nine payments. She later filed a police report. Caroline reportedly negotiated a $300,000 settlement after leaving Gaiman’s property. His representatives say she originally initiated the sexual encounter.

So far, many of these allegations seem to have some sort of payment involved with the incident. It is unclear if these payments were used as hush money or an agreement for the sexual encounters. The situation will no doubt trigger some sort of legal case against Gaiman.

In the meantime, Gaiman’s upcoming work has slightly been affected. The Sandman 2 and Anansi Boys remain on track for launch, but Good Omens season 3 has been edited to exclude his involvement. The third season has been edited down to a single 90-minute episode to tell the final story before likely being cancelled.

Disney has paused work on its adaptation of Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book. Netflix has also cancelled the Dead Boy Detectives. However, we don’t know if this is related to the allegations.
