Sixteen years after the original Shrek changed animation movies, the fifth film is on the way. DreamWorks Animation confirmed that Shrek 5 will be released on 1 July 2026 and see the original voice cast return to play their original characters.
Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz will reprise their roles as Shrek, Donkey and Fiona. Very little is known about the film at this time. The DreamWorks Animation teaser simply showed off a Shrek 5 logo floating into the air confirming the film’s production and release date.
Eddie Murphy already began teasing Shrek 5 a few months back. The actor who voices Donkey claimed he had already recorded the first act for the movie and would be doing more later this year. He also hinted at a possible Donkey spin-off.
The original Shrek movie was a historical release. The film launched back in 2001 and went on to rake in $487 million at the box office. The film’s success skyrocketed DreamWorks Animation into a powerhouse studio and helped spawn other great IPs including Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar and How to Train Your Dragon.
The original film was also the first animation to win the Best Animated Film award at the Oscars – an award given out every year since. Of course, DreamWorks Animation did milk the franchise with various spin-offs including short films and a handful of Puss in Boots movies. Along the way, we saw four Shrek movies released – some to lukewarm reception.
