Actor Eddie Murphy has revealed that Shrek 5 is already in production as the actors have been recording for the past few months. He also announced that Shrek 5 will be followed by a Donkey spin-off movie, though it will come at a much later stage.
This much was already teased at the end of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Since then, fans have been eagerly waiting for news regarding Shrek 5. As it turns out, work was already quietly being done behind the scenes. “We started doing [Shrek 5] four or five months ago,” said Eddie Murphy in an interview with Collider. “I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a Shrek, and we’re doing a Donkey [film].”
“I started recording Shrek, I think it’s coming out in 2025, and we’re doing a Donkey one next,” added Murphy, revealing that Donkey will only start production after Shrek 5 is out next year.
Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri confirmed the existence of Shrek 5 last year during an interview with Variety, though DreamWorks Animation hasn’t outright announced the sequel yet. However, Murphy’s recent comments are all the proof we need that it’s indeed happening. It also stands to reason that Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz would reprise their roles as Shrek and Fiona, respectively.
The main movies in the Shrek franchise might’ve ended with 2010’s Shrek Forever After but it continued with spin-offs revolving around the side character, Puss in Boots, voiced by Antonio Banderas. Shrek didn’t make an appearance in any of those movies but Puss in Boots proved to be a very popular character that could carry his own adventures.
If Murphy is right, then Shrek 5 will arrive sometime in 2025.
