Silent Hill: Ascension is an ‘Interactive Streaming Series’ Coming Late 2023

Konami and developer Genvid Entertainment have released a new trailer for its upcoming “interactive streaming series” Silent Hill: Ascension, due out later this year. The trailer offers a better understanding of the game’s story and characters, though recent details shed more light on how the “interactive streaming” parts will play out.

Silent Hill: Ascension won’t be a traditional video game but rather an interactive live-streaming series that, according to Genvid, will use a “real time interactive system that enables millions of people to help characters survive and change those characters’ fates.”

Most fans assumed that it would be similar to Supermassive Games’ titles like Until Dawn or The Dark Pictures Anthology where they will get to decide the fate of the characters and their choices, but that’s not the case here. Instead, several players from around the world will all essentially vote to make decisions, with the most voted options winning out in the end. On the one hand, it’s an original and interesting idea but on the other hand, it also detracts from experiencing the game on your own terms. Instead, you’re at the mercy of the popular votes and decisions made by other players.

Genvid says the story will be “an exploration of intergenerational trauma” with “an extensive ensemble of intricately developed new characters, monsters and locations in the Silent Hill universe.”

The series (we’re calling it that as opposed to a video game) will start sometime in late 2023 and will feature “daily can’t-miss live story moments where each day is different than the last based on audience actions.” Only time will tell if Ascension gains any sort of traction since it seems to heavily rely on the participation of others. At least we’ve got more traditional Silent Hill games to look forward to as well.
