A reboot of the Japanese survival horror game Siren has reportedly been rated in South Korea. Sony’s first-party studio Firesprite is apparently developing the project, according to new rumours. The leaks also state that this isn’t a remaster, remake or PS5 classics port but rather a full reboot of the franchise simply titled “Siren.”
The leak originates from 4chan, so it’s best to take everything said there with a pinch of salt. According to the rumour, Firesprite is developing the Siren reboot, claiming that Sony wants its own first-party survival horror franchise. The reboot will apparently have a similar premise with a “slight twist” as well as new characters. It’s also said to be visually quite impressive. The 4chan leaker claims that it missed a reveal during the recent PlayStation State of Play but could show up during The Game Awards this December.
For those that don’t know, Siren (also known as Forbidden Siren) was developed by Project Siren, a development team within the now-defunct Japan Studio, published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PS2 in 2003. It was directed and co-written by Keiichiro Toyama, the creator of the Silent Hill franchise, and is widely regarded as one of the most unique and scariest horror games of the PS2 generation, though it has often been criticised for its clunky controls.
The Siren series received a sequel, Siren 2, in 2006, and a remake/reimagining of the story in 2008 with Siren: Blood Curse.
Firesprite was formed in 2012 with several former developers from Psygnosis, the team behind the Wipeout series. The studio co-developed the PS VR2 exclusive Horizon: Call of the Mountain alongside Guerrilla Games last year.
It’s interesting that, if the rumours are true, Firesprite has been tasked with the development of a new Siren reboot and not Keiichiro Toyama and his team, who are currently working on the upcoming horror game Slitterhead under his new company, Bokeh Game Studio.
