The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a massive game in terms of content and role-playing freedom set in a fantasy world. One of those fantasies lets you live out your Underworld dreams of becoming a werewolf tearing through your enemies on the battlefield – or become part of an age-old bloody rivalry with vampires, whatever floats your boat. A former developer that worked on Skyrim has revealed that at one point, werewolves were almost cut from the game entirely.
Speaking on YouTube channel Kiwi Talkz, former Bethesda senior artist Dennis Mejillones spoke about the lengthy process of creating werewolves for Skyrim. “It was bad,” he said. “I mean, it was really bad, and a lot of people were like, ‘Oh man, this is bad.'” Mejillones added that Bethesda’s idea for werewolves in Skyrim was more of an experiment than an actual feature it planned to implement at the time. The dev said it “just had a head of a dog on a person, on a human body, with human hands and everything.”
The werewolves were about to be cut from Skyrim, so Mejillones took it into his own hands to create more grotesque designs for the creature. He stated:
“So I created a big, brute animal werewolf, and [animator Jeremy Bryant] and I worked on bringing this thing together in the game. We literally just started the game up, gave him the controller, gave him a few instructions on the werewolf. He looked at it, and he was like, ‘This is fucking awesome.'”
There are a few ways to become a werewolf in Skyrim, though the most popular route to furry vengeance seems to be joining the Companions guild up in Whiterun (spoiler alert, I guess: they’re secretly a clan of werewolves).
Bethesda is currently hard at work on The Elder Scrolls 6, which has no release date in sight yet.
