One devoted Skyrim fan has calculated exactly how many real-life steps it would take to cross the game’s massive map. As it turns out, Skyrim is a big world but not formidably big since it will take around 14,000 real-life steps to cross the entire map – at least from Riften to Solitude, which covers a sizeable chunk of the land mass.
As reported by GamesRadar, Skyrim player ShakeMistake used an app called Stepl that allows you to match your real-life steps with those of your in-game character fairly accurately. In order to calculate how many steps it would take to cross Skyrim, the player switched off AI detection (when on, it would’ve been near impossible to make the trek without running into random encounters). For the sake of a peaceful walk, ShakeMistake set out from Riften to the other side of Skyrim‘s map in Solitude.
The results are surprising, as it takes 14,000 real-life steps to make this journey – more accurately, 14,052 steps. From Riften to Solitude, this is more or less the longest trek a player can make on foot across the map. Of course, we also have to account for the fact that Skyrim‘s game map size pales in comparison to the actual size of the region according to the lore. Restrictions were put in place to downscale most of the locations due to hardware limitations.

As a little bonus, ShakeMistake also wanted to calculate how many steps it would take to climb to High Hrothgar’s famous 7,000 steps ascent – a feat which director Todd Howard stated would actually take 7,000 steps. According to player, it’s closer to 2,500 steps in-game. Using this metric, you can probably upscale Skyrim‘s world just over three times its in-game size if you want a more accurate estimation of the continent’s lore-accurate scale.
