Sleeping Dogs Movie Reportedly in Development With Simu Liu

Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings actor and MCU star Simu Liu is reportedly developing a live-action Sleeping Dogs movie based on the open world crime video game released in 2012. This news comes days after Liu stated that he’d be interested in making a movie adaptation of the beloved game.

Simu Liu, who plays the titular role in Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings in the MCU, recently stated on X, “Working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen!” He continued, “So few film projects make it from pitch phase to greenlight. Pitching execs who don’t understand the game has been tiring. Everyone’s overwhelming love of Sleeping Dogs here has really given us life! First a movie, then a sequel game for everyone… that’s always been the dream.”

According to IGN, Liu’s dream is finally becoming a reality. The actor is reportedly set to produce and star in the live-action Sleeping Dogs movie as protagonist Wei Chen, an undercover cop who attempts to infiltrate the Sun On Yee Triad organisation in Hong Kong. Back in 2017, famed martial arts actor Donnie Yen was attached to the project to take on the lead role but the movie didn’t end up happening.

It seems like discussions are being had about reviving the Sleeping Dogs movie and Liu seems quite enthusiastic about it. Let’s hope it actually moves forward this time (without conflicting with Liu’s work on the Shang-Chi sequel).

The description for Sleeping Dogs reads:

“Welcome to Hong Kong, a vibrant neon city teeming with life, whose exotic locations and busy streets hide one of the most powerful and dangerous criminal organizations in the world: the Triads. In this open world game, you play the role of Wei Shen, an undercover cop trying to take down the Triads from the inside out. You’ll have to prove yourself worthy as you fight your way up the organisation, taking part in brutal criminal activities without blowing your cover.”
