Solo Leveling Anime Adaptation Announced for 2023

Solo Leveling, the popular South Korean manhwa series from writer Chugong and artist Sung-rak Jang, is officially getting an anime adaptation in 2023. The anime project will be helmed by A-1 Pictures, with Re:Zero director Shunsuke Nakashige directing.

At Anime Expo yesterday, Crunchyroll unveiled a new anime adaptation of Solo Leveling based on the South Korean hit manhwa. A-1 Pictures, best known for Sword Art Online, Your Lie in April and Blue Exorcist, will be animating the ambitious project. A first teaser trailer was also released though it only showed concept art.

The plot description for Solo Leveling reads:

“It’s been over a decade since the sudden appearance of the ‘gates’—the paths that connect our world with a different dimension. Since then, certain humans have awakened to supernatural powers. We call these individuals ‘hunters.’ Hunters make their living by using their powers to conquer dungeons inside the gates.

In this world of tough customers, the low-ranked hunter Jinwoo Sung is known as ‘the weakest hunter of all mankind.’ One day, Jinwoo gets fatally injured when he runs into high-rank double dungeons hidden within a low-rank dungeon. Just then, a mysterious quest window appears in front of him. On the verge of death, Jinwoo decides to accept the quest and starts leveling up… while the others aren’t.”

Solo Leveling made a big impact when it began serialisation from 2018 to 2021. An anime adaptation has been a long time coming and it’s good to see talent such as A-1 Pictures behind the project. Hopefully, they can live up to Sung-rak Jang’s striking art style from the manhwa and tell the expansive story across multiple seasons.

Solo Leveling airs in 2023. Crunchyroll will stream the anime outside of Asia next year. Check out the teaser trailer below.
