Some Nintendo ‘Switch 2 Editions’ of Older Games Will Also Cost $80

Last month, Nintendo confirmed that some ‘Switch 2 editions’ of games were on the way, which are basically upgrades of existing and older titles from the original Switch. The company has now revealed the extent of these Switch 2 edition games and what will be required of customers. While there is an option to upgrade games at a cheaper price point if you already own those older titles, those looking to buy them brand new for the first time will have to pay up $80.

The $80 price point for next-gen Nintendo games hit a sore spot for many in the community, such is the case with the first official $80-priced title, Mario Kart World. However, that price will also be applicable to ‘Switch 2 editions’ of older games such as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom, Super Mario Party Jamboree and Kirby and The Forgotten Land. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild‘s Switch 2 edition will be priced at $70, which is less but still stings for a game released eight years ago.

Multiple US retailers are bracing customers for the $80 price tag if you’re new to a game or the ecosystem and want to experience it on the next-gen console with all the technical improvements.

There seems to be some confusion regarding the bizarre pricing model Nintendo is leaning towards. Mario Kart World will cost $80 but the new Donkey Kong Bananza, which was announced yesterday during the Direct showcase, will cost $65 digitally and $70 physically. Nintendo hasn’t clarified this pricing discrepancy yet, though it’s safe to assume that not every exclusive’s price will be jacked up to $80. We’ll have to wait for an official statement from Nintendo.
