Sonic Frontiers has received six minutes of gameplay from one of the game’s main areas, Chaos Island. This marks the first time that a Sonic game will tackle an open-world (or segmented open-world judging by its numerous islands), allowing players to explore different landscapes with plenty of opportunities for combat, platforming and traversal.
The Chaos Island gameplay for Sonic Frontiers shows off the island’s various zones, challenges and platforming sections that involves Sonic zipping around rails and collecting coins in the process. It also highlights some of the game’s combat, allowing Sonic to dash into enemies at high speeds.

Most of the gameplay we’ve seen so far for Sonic Frontiers has only gotten better, giving us more details about what we’ll be doing in the world as well as our objectives and activities. Despite shifting to larger outdoor areas, the game still retains Sonic’s trademark sense of speed, finding ways to incorporate it into the puzzles and platforming. Dashing through fields and mountainous areas at high speeds looks thrilling.
In related news, Sega will collaborate with Capcom to bring Monster Hunter DLC to Sonic Frontiers after launch in the form of free cosmetics, gear and a roasting mini-game. If you’re looking to pick up the game on PC, the full system requirements have also been announced.
A previous trailer for Sonic Frontiers released at Tokyo Game Show revealed that Sonic will be able to transform into Super Sonic at some point in the game, presumably when all of the Chaos Emeralds have been collected.
