Sonic Frontiers Hedgehog Rangers 2022

Sonic Frontiers Trademarked by Sega, Likely 2022 Sonic Game

Sega have trademarked the name Sonic Frontiers, a title which is yet to be given to a potential upcoming Sonic The Hedgehog game. Thanks to an earlier leak on 4chan, it seems like this might be the title for the 2022 Sonic game, which is said to be inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and features an open-world.

Sega recently registered a new trademark for the title Sonic Frontiers, which coincidentally lines up with a previous 4chan leak that stated it would be changing its name from Sonic Rangers to Frontiers. 4chan may be a sketchy source, but the fact that they got this right does lend some credibility to the rumour.

Earlier this year, Sega hosted a dedicated Sonic the Hedgehog event to celebrate the series’ 30th anniversary. They concluded the show with a teaser for a new, ambitious 3D Sonic game coming in 2022. Previous reports named this Sonic Rangers, but it’s now likely to be called Sonic Frontiers in the final product. Next year’s major entry is said to have an open-world similar to that of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and will feature the speedy hedgehog in his first true open-world adventure.

When asked about the project, veteran Sonic producer Takahashi Iizuka said:

“The new title in development is progressing towards a 2022 release, so I can’t really call it an Anniversary title. However, Sonic Adventure laid the foundation for 20 years of Sonic titles after its release, so in the same way I really hope that this new title releasing in 2022 lays the foundation for the following future Sonic titles – that is the idea behind the challenge for the team.”

We’ll just have to wait a little while longer to find out if the new Sonic game can live up to Sonic Adventure. The game will release on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Nintendo Switch.
