Sonic Movie Producer Wants to Create a Cinematic Universe

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is currently receiving mostly great reviews ahead of its release next month. However, a Paramount Pictures producer has plans to turn Sonic into a cinematic universe, with a third film already confirmed and a Tails solo movie reportedly planned.

Toby Ascher, who served as the producer on the first film and the upcoming sequel, has openly stated that they’re planning a Sonic cinematic universe. “We’re creating a Sonic cinematic universe, so we knew we were going to add characters, like Tails and Knuckles; new to the films but beloved by gamers all over the world,” said Ascher.

Back in February, Paramount Pictures already confirmed that a third Sonic film is in the works along with a live-action TV series. The series will focus on Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba), with plans to launch it next year on their streaming service Paramount+.

In addition to the sequels and TV series, a report by Giant Freakin Robot claims that a Tails solo movie is also in development, though Paramount Pictures haven’t officially announced this yet.

Both live-action Sonic the Hedgehog films seem to be faring well with fans and critics. Many have praised the cast and their chemistry, as well as the faithfulness to the games’ source material. For the most part, viewers agree that they’re on the better end of video game movie adaptations.

It’s no surprise that they’re trying to create a cinematic universe now, given the success of the movies. There’s also a wealth of content in the source material to draw from, ranging from an assortment of Sonic’s allies and adversaries to expanded content beyond the games. The big question on most fans’ minds is whether or not they’ll ever introduce Shadow the Hedgehog.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 releases on 8 April 2022 in cinemas.
