Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Has Greatest Video Game Movie Opening Weekend Ever

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 released over the weekend and has received the greatest opening weekend for any video game-based movie ever, topping the weekend at over R1 billion.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 released this past weekend and despite all the memes and ridicule on the internet that the initial title suffered, the sequel has pulled off an absolutely monstrous feat, rather unexpectedly. The sequel not only amassed roughly $71 million in its opening weekend but also grossed the highest amount for any video game-based movie in its opening weekend ever.

Comicbook also noted that the original film grossed $58 million (R850 million) in its opening weekend which was still rather impressive given the initial hesitation about the film. The follow-up here showcases that Sonic the Hedgehog is hitting the right notes with its audience.

Not only does Sonic the Hedgehog 2 take the title for the largest opening weekend for a video game-based movie but it also marks lead character Jim Carrey’s biggest US opener. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 shadowed Bruce Almighty as Carrey’s biggest opener, with the latter grossing $68 million during its opening weekend.

Lastly, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 also marks Paramount’s fifth number-one movie in the last two years proving again that the Sonic movie franchise has exceeded so many people’s expectations – certainly mine.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Cinematic Universe

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is part of a “cinematic universe” according to the producers who are already planning a third movie in the mainline series, as well as a Tails solo movie. “We’re creating a Sonic cinematic universe, so we knew we were going to add characters, like Tails and Knuckles; new to the films but beloved by gamers all over the world”, said Toby Ascher, a lead producer on both films.

There is also a live-action series in the works that will seemingly form part of the cinematic universe and will revolve around Knuckles who will be voiced by Idris Elba.
