Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie Release Date Confirmed

The third Sonic the Hedgehog movie now has a release date. Paramount Pictures and SEGA recently announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be racing into cinemas on 20 December 2024, just in time for the holiday season. The announcement was accompanied by a GIF of Sonic, Tail and Knuckles, implying that all three characters will be present for the upcoming sequel.

The official Sonic movie account tweeted the exciting news, stating, “Running faster, flying higher, and punching harder. #SonicMovie3 hits theatres on December 20, 2024.” It’s no surprise that a third movie has been greenlit given that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 managed to make over $400 million at the global box office in just three months. At $190 million, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is also the highest-grossing video game movie of all time in the United States.

Before we continue, we’ll have to talk the ending of the second movie, so be weary of spoilers before you proceed.

The post-credits scene for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 introduced the fan-favourite Shadow the Hedgehog, who will likely play a big part in the third movie, possibly in an antagonistic role. It’s unclear if Jim Carrey will return as Dr. Robotnik for the upcoming movie since the actor announced that he would be taking a break from acting earlier this year.

In related news, Bandai Namco Entertainment and Wayfarer Studios announced a live-action movie adaptation of Pac-Man, which is currently in development. Additionally, Nintendo and Illumination Studios are working on an animated adaptation of Super Mario starring Chris Pratt as the beloved Italian plumber.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will likely enter production sometime next year, where it will clash with Avatar 3 in cinemas during the 2024 holiday season. If anything, Sonic’s success in the movie world is evidence enough that video game movies can work if enough passion and care is put into the project.
