The reviews are officially in for both Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Mufasa: The Lion King. To everyone’s surprise and simultaneously no one’s, Sonic reviews seem to have blazed ahead of Disney’s prequel to The Lion King. If you were ever in doubt about which movie to see this holiday season with your family and friends, here’s your answer.
Over on RottenTomatoes, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 currently has an 87% approval rating with its critics consensus reading, “With a double helping of Jim Carrey’s antics and a quicksilver pace befitting its hero, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is the best entry in this amiable series yet.” Meanwhile, Mufasa: The Lion King is sitting on 59%, which is higher than the 2019 live-action movie but not quite enough to win some critics over.
On the review aggregate website Metacritic, where review averages are weighted by scores instead of approvals, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 has an average of 62, getting ‘Generally Favourable’ reviews from critics. Mufasa: The Lion King has an average score of 58, getting ‘Mixed or Average’ reviews from critics.
Early first reactions for Sonic The Hedgehog 3 were quite positive so it’s no surprise that many critics are considering the third outing to be the best in the series yet. Alongside Ben Schwartz returning as the voice of Sonic, the movie also stars Idris Elba as Knuckles, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails and Keanu Reeves who joined the franchise as Shadow the Hedgehog. The plot description reads:
“Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.”
Sonic The Hedgehog 3 hits South African cinemas on 27 December, while Mufasa: The Lion King arrives on 20 December (we recommend you watch Sonic, by the way). See what else is coming to theatres in South Africa this holiday season.
