Sony and Apple have been working together to add PS VR2 controller support to Apple’s mixed reality Vision Pro headset. According to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the announcement was meant to take place weeks ago but was recently delayed due to technical issues.
The report claims that Apple and Sony have already implemented support for the PS VR2 Sense Controllers on the headset. The two companies have also worked out distribution rights to sell the controllers separately at Apple Stores and other retailers. This would be the first time you would be able to purchase the controllers without the bundled VR headset included.
Of course, this means that Apple is unlocking a lot more gaming potential by adding the PS VR2 controllers to the Vision Pro. However, Apple reportedly wants to use the PS VR2 Sense Controllers for more than gaming. The company has worked on in-app support for some of its best first-party apps such as Final Cut Pro. Users will be able to fully control the program using the motion tracking and buttons on the controllers. The analogue would also let you scroll to timelines and menus.
As for gaming, the Apple Vision Pro doesn’t really have the best gaming lineup on the market. It is limited to very specific apps. There’s also no way to link the headset to a PC to run PC VR. So this means the PS VR2 Sense Controllers might have little appeal to gamers out there. Not to mention the headset is still very expensive.
We don’t know when Apple and Sony will make the official announcement on this. The report claims the tech is ready and tests have been done. Given we are a few weeks away from the holiday season, this news might be delayed to 2025.
