Sony has announced a sleuth of new movies and TV shows currently in development at PlayStation Productions including updates on the progress of its live-action Horizon Zero Dawn project, a Helldivers movie and a Ghost of Tsushima anime. The announcements were made at CES 2025 aka the biggest tech conference in the world.
PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash and Screen Gems president Ashley Brucks took the stage at CES 2025 to announce a bunch of new movies and TV shows after proudly talking about the success of The Last of Us, Gran Turismo, Twisted Metal and Uncharted.
The first announcement was for a live-action Helldivers movie being developed at Sony Pictures. Ironically, Helldivers lifted quite a bit of inspiration from the Starship Troopers movies so I guess it comes full circle now. After the critical and commercial success of Helldivers 2 last year, it makes sense that Sony would want to expand the IP into other mediums.
Additionally, Sony also gave fans an update on the Horizon Zero Dawn live-action which won’t be a TV show anymore but a movie. Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions will oversee the development of the movie, which will retell protagonist Aloy’s origin story in a world inhabited by machines. Casting has yet to begin for the role of Aloy, though fans are already cheering for either Stranger Things actress Sadie Sink or Game of Thrones actress Rose Leslie to win the part.
Sony also confirmed that Aniplex and Crunchyroll are teaming up to create an anime based on Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima, though details on this project are murky right now. To cap off Sony’s CES presentation which focused on movies and TV shows, Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann shared a new clip from HBO’s The Last of Us season 2 which debuts on HBO Max and Showmax this April. You can watch the clip below.
