Today Sony announced its financial results for the past quarter which runs from 1 April 2019 to 30 June 2019. The console giant reported on some big sales numbers but the biggest news of all has to be the grand total of PS4 shipped since launch hitting 100 million units.

Sony revealed 3.2 million consoles were purchased by retailers worldwide in the last quarter which pushed the grand total number over the 100 million unit mark. This is a big deal for the console maker as 100 million units is a milestone and has not been done by Sony since the PS2.
The PS4 sales are strong but Sony has reduced its estimates for the next year ahead to 111.8 million units by 31 March 2020, down from 116 million.
Sony also revealed sales have decreased by 3% due to lower sales of games offset by an increase in PS4 hardware and network sales including PlayStation Plus.
In other news, PlayStation Plus subscriber total is now at 36.2 million, up from 34 million earlier this year. The gap is still quite large given Sony has now shipped 100 million units and only around 30% of owners are subscribed to the service. Give or take hardware owners having two consoles and account sharing being a factor.
Still, Sony has no doubt taken the lead this generation with PS4 sales. Microsoft stopped reporting on Xbox One sales a couple of years ago after the slow adoption rate hindered its financial reports. Nintendo is slowly creeping up behind Sony too with the Switch moving 35 million units as of March 2019.
The company will no doubt hit the 110 million mark by the end of its next financial year which is in March 2020. With new releases such as The Last of Us Part II, Death Stranding and more coming out before then, these will see a drive for hardware sales for the company.
