Sony has officially named its upcoming virtual reality technology for the PS5. The company is calling the PlayStation VR headset simply “PlayStation VR2” and the fancy new controllers are called “PlayStation Sense Controllers”. Along with the official names, the company has also announced its first PlayStation VR2 exclusive game set in the Horizon series called Horizon Call of The Mountain.
At its CES 2022 press conference, CEO Jim Ryan took to the stage to share a little bit more information in regards to PlayStation VR2. He confirmed that the headset will pack a series of new features and tech including haptic feedback, eye tracking, 4K HDR, 90/120Hz frame rates, foveated rendering and a 110-degree field of view. We also know that the PlayStation VR2 headset will connect to the PS5 using the USB-C port at the front of the console.
While Ryan didn’t share any actual hardware images of the headset, he is confident that the technology will reshape VR gaming in the industry.
PlayStation VR2 owners can look forward to a special exclusive experience set to launch alongside the hardware in late 2022. Horizon Call of The Mountain is a new project currently in development for VR hardware. It is being developed in-house at Guerilla Games and will take full advantage of the hardware in every way possible. Sony released a short teaser that includes a few seconds of in-game footage. The PlayStation VR2 and PlayStation Sense Controllers are expected to launch sometime this year. It has been reported that Sony has already entered mass production for the hardware so perhaps we will see a release date sooner than expected.
