Sony Backtracks on Horizon Forbidden West Paid Console Upgrades Making it Free

Sony has decided to no longer charge gamers that purchase Horizon Forbidden West on PS4 and want to upgrade their game to the PS5 version at a later date. The company came under fire last week when the pre-orders for the upcoming PlayStation exclusive went live. At the time, Sony made things difficult for gamers. Firstly, if you purchased the Special, Regalla or Collector’s Edition of Horizon Forbidden West, you were locked into the version of the game you got with the bundle. Secondly, Sony did not have an option for gamers to upgrade their digital versions of the game either. You would have to purchase the entire PS5 edition separately.

The company has now decided to allow users a free upgrade across PS4 and PS5 consoles. So if you buy the PS4 Special Edition or Standard Edition, you can then upgrade to the PS5 version without paying the extra cash. This move was necessary given that Sony did promise gamers a free upgrade program for all games back in 2020.

Two Major Triple-A PS5 Exclusives To Debut During PlayStation Showcase

Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan shared a statement on the PlayStation Blog where he clarified the change. It reads:

Thursday was to be a celebration of Horizon Forbidden West and the amazing team at Guerrilla working to deliver it on February 18, 2022. However, it’s abundantly clear that the offerings we confirmed in our pre-order kickoff missed the mark.

Last year we made a commitment to deliver free upgrades for our cross-gen launch titles, which included Horizon Forbidden West. While the pandemic’s profound impact pushed Forbidden West out of the launch window we initially envisioned, we will stand by our offer: Players who purchase Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free.

I also want to confirm today that moving forward, PlayStation first-party exclusive cross-gen titles (newly releasing on PS4 & PS5)–both digital and physical*–will offer a $10 USD digital upgrade option from PS4 to PS5. This will apply to the next God of War and Gran Turismo 7, and any other exclusive cross-gen PS4 & PS5 title published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

— Jim Ryan, President & CEO, Sony Interactive Entertainment

Ryan also made it clear that future PS4 and PS5 cross-console games will not offer a free upgrade. This goes for the upcoming God of War and Gran Turismo 7. In addition, any other PS4 and PS5 titles Sony announces, probably at this week’s PlayStation Showcase event, will also include paid upgrades.

At the moment, the PS4 version of Horizon Forbidden West is cheaper than the PS5 version. So it makes sense to just pre-order that copy of the game and get your free PS5 upgrade when it releases. Horizon Forbidden West is scheduled to release on 18 February 2021 on PS4 and PS5.
