Sony wants you to buy its 2022 Bravia TV range and get the features later. This marks the third year that the company has announced new Bravia TVs with the promise of features that aren’t actually on the TV. This means when you take it out of the box, don’t expect the TV to actually do what it says it does on the product site. Sure, this is limited to a specific range of its new TVs but you would think the company would have sorted this out by now. Unfortunately, the Sony Bravia X90K (along with the 2021 X90J and the X80K, X95K) doesn’t come with VRR out of the box.
Sony says that the only new Bravia 2022 TV that comes with VRR pre-installed is the Mini LED Z9K. Other than that, you’ll need to take the gamble whether or not Sony will actually release VRR on the rest of the TVs this year. Keep in mind that even the 2019 Bravia range lacks full VRR support. In fact, Sony released the feature, it didn’t work properly and the company released a statement claiming it isn’t fully supported as of yet.

The elephant in the room is hard to ignore. Sony has burnt its customer base in the past by promising features on its Bravia TV range that either doesn’t work properly or never arrive. This includes its blurry 4K 120Hz mode across its Bravia range and of course, the lack of VRR on many displays that have been on the market for almost two years now. It kind of sounds like Sony’s Bravia TVs simply cannot do VRR but the company lists it as a product feature anyway.
According to Sony’s gaming page, the company claims VRR will be fully available for the Bravia TV range and PS5 by the end of January 2022. However, the company listed the same footnotes back in 2021 promising the feature by the end of the year.
So if you’re in the market for a Bravia TV then you should be cautious. Most of the TVs both current and upcoming, don’t have all of their features available and there is simply no trusting Sony when it comes to adding them. Users on Reddit have also pointed out that the new Bravia 2022 TV range makes use of the same MediaTek SOC that has proven to be an issue in the past when it comes to performance. This also means that the Bravia 2022 TV range is still limited to two HDMI 2.1 ports.

Bravia Master Series
The Master Series is Sony’s new Mini LED and OLED range. The company is moving away from OLED technology this year and embracing not only Mini LED but also 8K TVs. Sony says the Mini LED range will use precise local dimming thanks to increasing the number of LED lights in the back of the display while also decreasing the size of the LEDs. Sony is calling this tech “XR Backlight Master Drive”.
