Sony Bravia X90H Gets VRR and ALLM Firmware Update – How to Manually Install It

Just a day after we reported on the lack of VRR and ALLM on the Sony Bravia X90H TV sets, the company has begun rolling out the much-anticipated update for the displays. Users with Sony Bravia X90H TVs can now look forward to VRR and ALLM enabled on their displays after updating to the latest software. If you don’t want to wait for Sony to release the Bravia X90H VRR and ALLM firmware in your region, you can manually install it using the links down below.

While this VRR and ALLM update is a sigh of relief for owners, you do need to keep in mind that it also does come with its own set of drawbacks. Firstly, this Sony Bravia VRR and ALLM update does not enable a Dolby Vision Game Mode on the TV. This means users still cannot make use of the new Dolby Vision gaming experience on the Xbox Series X/S without the 150ms input lag.

Another thing to take note of is that once you enable VRR on your input (through HDMI 3 or HDMI 4) the Sony Bravia X90H also disables local dimming. This is due to the TV’s inability to adjust the local dimming of the panel while also stabilizing the frame rate through the VRR feature. So you either keep VRR on or keep local dimming enabled.

It is unclear whether or not Sony will add a Dolby Vision Game Mode to the Bravia X90H at this time. Until then, the Xbox Series X/S Dolby Vision for gaming feature is pretty useless on the display. You simply cannot play any game with a 150ms input lag. We also doubt there will be a way to have both Local Dimming enabled while making use of VRR. Users will have to decide what they want out of their TVs.

I tested out the VRR and ALLM update and it works as expected. After updating my TV, a new option was added in the External Inputs – HDMI Signal Format menu. HDMI 3 and HDMI 4 both have Enhanced Format (VRR) added to the options list. Here you can enable and disable the feature. Sony Bravia X90H owners who didn’t get the Android TV 10 update will also be happy to know that it has arrived with this update too. Now we just need to wait for Sony to update the PS5 with VRR.
