Sony has more live-service games in the works than it seems. While the company has been tight-lipped over how many games were taking this approach, in the past year we have seen a few get canned. The company struck gold with Helldivers 2 in 2024 but had the historical failure of Concord at the same time. The company also cancelled The Last of Us Factions last year.
It seems that even more PlayStation Studios were working on live-service games. According to Bloomberg, Sony Bend, the studio behind Days Gone and Syphon Filter, had a live-service game in the works. This has now been cancelled.
The report claims that Bluepoint Games, the team behind the masterful Demon’s Souls remake, was working on a live-service God of War title. It has also been cancelled. The game was reportedly in the works for a couple of years at the studio.
Bloomberg says the cancellations won’t lead to these studios shutting down. However, Sony has to now determine the path forward and what projects they will work on going ahead. By the sound of things, these studios put the majority of their workforce on these live-service games without any other projects being developed on the side. So it might be a while before we see another Bluepoint and Sony Bend game.
Sony is trying hard to catch lightning in a bottle with the live-service genre. The company even went as far as to purchase Bungie, who, at the time, were live-service kings thanks to Destiny. Sadly, that hasn’t worked out all that well. Bungie reported massive losses, huge dips in player counts, historically low pre-orders for the final expansion, all of which led to surprise layoffs at the company.
Up to now, these are the confirmed cancelled live-service games at PlayStation
- Concord [cancelled]
- Unannounced God of War game [cancelled]
- The Last of Us multiplayer [cancelled]
- Spider-Man 2 multiplayer [cancelled]
- Bend Studio multiplayer [cancelled]
- Twisted Metal (Firesprite) [cancelled]
- London Studio’s co-op game (studio closed) [cancelled]
- Deviation Games’ MP game [cancelled]
- Payback (3rd person Destiny spin-off from Bungie) [cancelled]
But outside of these unwanted live-service projects, Sony does have some first-party games coming our way. Insomniac Games is working on Marvel’s Wolverine, Naughty Dog has its new IP, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, and Sucker Punch is working on the Ghost of Yotei.
