Sony has debuted conceptual technology at CES 2025 that puts players in a virtual reality experience unlike any other. Titled the Future Immersive Entertainment Concept, players enter a giant VR cube with very high-definition screens on every wall that then transports them into the worlds of video games – in this case, it was The Last of Us. Using the cube’s screen layout, players had much wider vision and audio awareness of the game, even going as far as being able to smell clickers.
Through the Future Immersive Entertainment Concept, Sony says players are delivered “engaging audio” as well as “scent and atmospherics with interactive PlayStation game content.” Attendees at CES 2025 got an opportunity to try out this concept tech. As reported by IGN, they’d shoot clickers using an imitation gun, presumably getting a whiff of rotten fungus from the corpses. So far, it seems like only The Last of Us was demonstrated so there’s no way of knowing what other games could benefit from, well, being smelled.
At the moment, it simply remains concept tech and will likely take years to actually appear on (very big) shelves, if it does leave the concept phase. We assume it will also be incredibly expensive given its futuristic design and bulky size that probably won’t fit too comfortably in your living room, so don’t expect to see this on the market anytime soon.
In case you missed it, Sony also took the opportunity to unveil a bunch of new movies and TV shows at CES 2025 including a movie adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn, a Helldivers movie and a Ghost of Tsushima anime. It’s unclear how far along the Ghost of Tsushima movie adaptation is, which is coming to us from Chad Stahelski, the director of the John Wick movies.
