Sony Confirms PS5 is on Track for Holiday 2020 Release

With the current COVID-19 pandemic gripping every corner of the globe, releasing next-gen hardware seems to be tough. However, Sony has publically addressed the concern surrounding the upcoming PS5 console saying the hardware is on track to launch this holiday season. The company released a statement touching on its PS4, PlayStation Network services and the upcoming PlayStation 5 console. In addition, they shared the current state of development surrounding the console.

“Regarding the PlayStation 5, although factors such as employees working from home and restrictions on international travel have presented some challenges in regards to the part of the testing process and the qualification of production lines, development is progressing with the launch of the console scheduled for the 2020 holiday season.

Sony also addressed the current game development pipeline concerns saying;

At this point in time major problems have not arisen in the game software development pipeline for Sony’s own first-party studios or its partners’ studios.

Sony seems confident that the PS5 will release this year. In addition, they seem to have a solid lineup of first-party games to release alongside the console too. Games which have not suffered any delay. However, we don’t know how limited the PlayStation 5 will be at launch. Rumours claim Sony will be shipping the console in very limited quantities at first and will ramp up production after launch.

Sony has not provided guidance for the PlayStation 5 hardware and software for the fiscal year. There’s no sales forecast either so we don’t know what the company expects to sell at this point. Yesterday a job listing at the company leaked revealing an October 2020 release date for the console. However, Sony quickly shot down those rumours claiming the ad was incorrect.
