Sony Expects The Biggest Holiday Season For PlayStation Yet

Sony is expecting to make bank this holiday season thanks to the PS5. According to Sony Interactive Entertainment senior vice president and head of global marketing Eric Lempel, this is the first holiday season where anyone and everyone can simply go purchase a PS5 in-store without the worry of stock limitations.

Lempel says that due to the replenished stock of the console, the PlayStation brand expects the holiday season to be one of the strongest to date. This includes console sales as well as supported software sales.

PlayStation is hoping that everyone runs out to purchase a PS5 console this holiday season. With the launch of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 last week, this might be likely the case. The game has already sold over 2.5 million copies since its launch making it the biggest first-party PlayStation title launch to date. The game reached this milestone within only 24 hours.

“Our outlook on PlayStation 5 is really strong. We’re expecting one of the strongest seasons in our history in terms of console sales.”

Lempel also says that PlayStation VR2 has yet to reach its potential. Sony hasn’t revealed just how many units of the VR headset it has sold since its launch in early 2023.

“The VR category is important to us. It’s a category that can help us with innovation. It’s never going to be the only way people play games, but I’m happy that we’re in it. There are great experiences to be had and consumers really like it. But it’s a nascent business for us.”

Keep in mind that Sony is also launching its new PS5 Slim console in November. Its launch will likely help accelerate PS5 console sales during the holiday season. The console is 30% lighter and up to 24% slimmer than the launch model. It also comes with an optional detachable disc drive which requires the internet in order to function.
