A couple of weeks ago, Sony hosted a new PlayStation State of Play event that many would agree was a bit underwhelming. While we did get a few good announcements, it was arguably lacking the surprise factor summer gaming events typically deliver. However, Sony might be holding its aces for next year as a new rumour claims that the company has multiple major first-party games planned for 2025.
The rumour originates from leaker Shinobi602 who, up until now, has mostly been correct about Sony insider information. According to the leaker, Sony apparently has multiple big first-party games coming in 2025. Furthermore, they aren’t from developers not owned by Sony (Stellar Blade‘s Shift Up, Rise of the Ronin‘s Team Ninja, etc.) but rather from the major teams at PlayStation Studios. We recommend taking information with a pinch of salt until we start getting release dates.
Of course, there’s quite a bit of speculation about what Sony could be planning for 2025. We already know that Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is one of next year’s big PS5 releases. Beyond that, it’s possible that we might finally get Ghost of Tsushima 2. There’s also the question of what God of War developer Santa Monica Studio is working on next, specifically the unannounced game under director Cory Barlog who stepped back from the director’s chair for God of War Ragnarok to reportedly work on this mystery game.
The release calendar for PS5 games this year has mostly been propped up by third-party exclusive titles like Stellar Blade, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Rise of the Ronin. However, Sony’s first-party studios – Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch Productions, Bluepoint Games, Santa Monica Studio and many others – have been silent, leadin many to speculate that PlayStation’s heavy-hitters are yet to come.
Meanwhile, Microsoft recently had a pretty impressive blowout with the Xbox Games Showcase that’s being regarded as the best gaming showcase of the summer so far.
