There seems to be a lot of confusion online surrounding the delay of Black Myth Wukong on Xbox. The game launched earlier in August for PS5 and PC and so far, there’s no Xbox version anywhere to be seen. Developer Game Science has confirmed that Xbox players will eventually get the game, but when is the question?
Of course, due to the delay and the what-looks-like-a-PS5-exclusive-deal, fanboys and even some misinformed media outlets have spread rumours that Sony had an exclusive launch deal with Game Science to block the Xbox launch. It doesn’t help that Phil Spencer also chimed in on the matter a while back saying he “won’t comment on deals developers make with other console platforms” when asked about Black Myth Wukong.
We have also heard that Black Myth Wukong wasn’t running very well on the Xbox Series S. Reports claim there’s a technical issue that stems from a memory leak which has caused headaches for the studio. As a result, the game was delayed.
This has now been backed up by another source who claims Sony helped pay for some of the development around the PS5 port. This funding was only to help get the port developed and released on the platform. It wasn’t to block the Xbox release. The source claims there is no exclusivity deal between Game Science and Sony.
We have heard of Sony doing this in the past for a number of games. Sony often outsources their development teams to help work on games. As a result, it means these games run smoother on PS5 and don’t suffer from any delays. Black Myth Wukong seems to be another example. Does this mean the studio prioritizes PS5? Who knows, but in the past, we have seen games released across all platforms at the same time.
I guess right now we won’t really know the truth behind the lack of Black Myth Wukong on Xbox. Most reports claim it was delayed due to technical issues similar to how Baldur’s Gate 3 was pushed back too. Others say Sony paid to block it. Until we hear some official information, we aren’t sure.
