Sony Now Producing PlayStation VR2 With 2 Million Units Planned For Launch

Sony is reportedly ramping up production of the PlayStation VR2 headset ahead of its rumoured release date in March 2023. The company is apparently targeting to produce 2 million units by March next year as it predicts the hardware will sell faster than the original PlayStation VR headset on the PS4.

It originally took Sony seven months to sell 1 million PS VR units on the PS4. The company now expects to move double that number in the same time frame with the PlayStation VR2 headset.

Bloomberg reports that Sony kicked off production of the PlayStation VR2 headset last month already. The report claims that the device has not been impacted by any supply chain constraints currently taking place. Sony is also looking to improve the supply of the PS5 console in the months ahead in time for the festive season. However, the report claims that PS5 console supply issues might only ease in early 2023.

Sony originally planned to release the PS VR2 this year but seemingly delayed the hardware launch. Reports claim that the delay was done in order to prep the launch lineup for the hardware. Sony says they will have more than 20 games ready for the launch when the hardware does roll out across the globe.

SIE president Jim Ryan said in May.

“Right now, there is a considerable amount of money being spent on partnerships with independent and other third-party developers to secure a considerable pipeline of attractive VR content at the launch of PlayStation VR2.

We also recently learnt that the PlayStation VR2 headset won’t be compatible with previous games. However, reports also claim that Sony is urging developers to port their previous titles to the new headset. If anything, having these games available at the launch of the PlayStation VR2 would also bloat the lineup and make the hardware a lot more compelling.

“PSVR games are not compatible with PSVR 2 because PSVR 2 is designed to deliver a truly next-generation VR experience. PSVR 2 has much more advanced features like all new controllers with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers and inside-out tracking, eye tracking in the headset, 3D audio all coming together of course. So this means developing PSVR 2 requires a whole different approach from the original PSVR.”
