Sony Reportedly Working on Native PS3 Playback on PS5

Sony is reportedly working on implementing native PS3 emulation support on PS5. The feature will essentially add backwards compatibility to the console instead of relying on Sony’s cloud-powered PS3 emulation which is available through PlayStation Plus Premium.

At the moment, the majority of Sony’s PS3 lineup requires an online connection in order to play the game. The library of games is also limited to what is available on the PlayStation Plus service. The PS3 was also all but abandoned at the launch of the PS4 when Sony released the console without any backward compatibility support at all.

As a result, hundreds of PS3 games including a substantial number of PlayStation 3 exclusive titles were left behind. The only way to play the likes of Resistance, InFAMOUS, Killzone and LittleBigPlanet is to emulate the games on PC or purchase a PS3 console.

According to a new report, the feature is currently in the works at Sony to enable dedicated local PS3 support on the PS5. At the moment details are scarce but XboxEra says “select” games are being worked on. There’s no word yet whether these games will come with FPS boosts and other graphics enhancements.

We also don’t know if you’ll be able to insert your PS3 disc into the PS5 and download the PS5-ready game port. This is how Microsoft rolled out Xbox 360 backward compatibility on the Xbox One.

The source simply says:

“I didn’t get any more details than that. Will it have an FPS boost? I’ve got no idea…All I heard was that Sony’s working on selective PlayStation 3 backwards compatibility.”

All we know at the moment is that this feature is supposedly “native” support. This means you won’t need to live in a certain country with cloud gaming enabled to use it. The PS4 games will run from the PS5 itself. Again, “what games” is still the question.

Sony is expected to host a PlayStation Showcase event later this year. Rumours claim the showcase will take place in September. It will play host to a number of updates to PS5 and PS VR2 games alongside information regarding the PS5 Pro. The beefed-up console is expected to launch later this year.
