Sony has officially announced its next-gen console will indeed be called the PS5 and the release date of “holiday 2020”. The announcement was made on the PlayStation Blog where the company announced the new console’s release window and DualShock 5 controller details.

According to the information from Sony, the new DualShock 5 will feature two major key changes. Haptic feedback will replace the standard vibration found in most modern controllers and new adaptive triggers will replace the standard R2 and L2 buttons.
The DualShock 5 controller for the PS5 will also feature USB C charging and a higher capacity battery making the controller heavier (a good thing for some). As for the Haptic Feedback, system architect Mark Cerny revealed in an interview with Wired that the feature makes use of “highly programmable voice-coil actuators located in the left and right grips of the controller”. This will help deliver the new vibration similar to the feeling of Apple’s current iPhone devices. The rumble will offer a more tactile response than the DualShock 4.
The vibration, for example, will replicate footsteps giving the player a more immersive feeling of the game they are playing. The next-gen PS5 controller will also feature an improved speaker which Wired reports is clearer than the current model.
As for the new adaptive triggers, developers can program the resistance of the triggers so that you feel the tactile sensation of drawing a bow and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain. So in short, the triggers will be harder to press in depending on the developer’s programming.
We now also know the PS5 will use 100GB optical disks and an optical drive that will play 4K Blurays. Game installation from disks will be mandatory due to the transferring speed of data between the disk drive and the solid-state drive. Cerny also revealed that game installations will be highly customizable as players can delete game modes and even portions of the campaign which they have already cleared in order to free up space for other games.
As for the console’s home screen, it will allow players the flexibility on how they enter their games. Players will be able to boot the game right into the multiplayer activity and mode or right into the single-player mission they were last in.
It has also been confirmed that the previously-leaked Sony PS5 Devkit is indeed real and has the same design as the device we spotted a few weeks ago.
We will be updating you as we learn more about the upcoming PlayStation 5 console as more details come to light.
