Sony Says AMD FSR 4 is Coming to PS5 Pro as The Next Evolution of PSSR

Sony hopes to implement a new AI upscaling formula for the PS5 Pro to make visuals look even crisper and sharper than ever before with AMD FSR 4, which is now shipping with the AMD RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT graphics cards. At the moment, PS5 Pro games use AI upscaling through PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) which can essentially turn 720p images into 4K while adding new particle effects and smoothening out visuals altgoether.

In an interview with Digital Foundry, PlayStation architect Mark Cerny revealed that Sony plans on having “something very similar” to AMD FSR 4 available for PS5 Pro in 2026. “Our target is to have something very similar to FSR 4’s upscaler available on PS5 Pro for 2026 titles as the next evolution of PSSR,” he told the outlet. Cerny stated that he believes the PS5 Pro’s hardware is already up to the task of handling FSR 4 without completely re-architecting the console.

Cerny says it’s still encouraging developers to use PSSR as it will take some time to “reimplement” FSR 4’s upscaling into the PS5 Pro as well as its games, hence the expected 2026 date.

Back in December, Sony and AMD announced a multi-year collaboration simply called Project Amethyst. According to the system architect, AMD FSR 4 was the first big hurdle that the companies tackled. “The neural network (and training recipe) in FSR 4’s upscaler are the first results of the Amethyst collaboration,” Cerny confirmed. Of course, Project Amethyst’s plans extend well beyond the PS5 Pro, possibly laying the brick work for the next generation of PlayStation hardware as well.

As for the PS6, Sony and AMD have already partnered on the console’s development. Back in September 2024, a report claimed that Sony already began early development on the PS6 back in 2022, just two years into the current generation. AMD will apparently be developing the chip for the next-gen console, which isn’t all that surprising considering the strong history between the two companies.
