As you know, the PS4 cools better when standing up. This is due to the fact that there’s less hardware touching a surface to attract heat. If you are reading this and your PS4 is loud, then try and stand it up, it really helps. The PS5 cooling performance won’t suffer from the same issue according to Sony. The company claims that the console delivers the same performance whether or not it is standing up or laying down. Which is the best PS5 position to get the best cooling? It does not matter.

In a new interview with 4Gamer, Sony Interactive Entertainment Mechanical Design Department VP Yasuhiro Ootori revealed his favourite PS5 position and how the “chimney” cooling design helps the console. Ootori claims there’s no difference between the verticle and horizontal PS5 position when it comes to cooling. Ootori is the same man who performed the PS5 teardown a few weeks ago. You can watch that here.
[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”#337FFF” class=”” size=”21″]”I think some people think that the heat dissipation efficiency should be higher in the vertical installation due to the chimney effect. However, in a cooling system with an active fan, the chimney effect is at the measurement error level. It works according to the specifications in both horizontal and vertical installation.”[/perfectpullquote]
The cooling system makes sense. The PS5 stand is also designed to make the console float above the table which helps with airflow too. Ootori says that his favourite PS5 position is verticle due to the fact that users can see the PS logo correctly. When the console is horizontal, the logo is at the back of the device and you can’t see it as clearly.
So there you have it. The PS5 stays cool no matter what position you use. Keep in mind that environmental situations may change this. Placing the console in a cabinet will result in a hotter device compared to standing it next to your TV in a well-ventilated area.
The PS5 is set to launch on 12 November in the US and 12 November in South Africa.
