Those of you looking to upgrade your PS5 storage will be happy to know that Sony is finally making progress on the feature. The console maker has published a web page detailing the PS5 SSD upgrade process and requirements. Keep in mind that at the moment, it seems that the feature is still currently only available to PS5 software beta testers but this is a sure sign the public will get it soon. Sony opened up PS5 beta testing last month but at the moment the program is only available to US, Canada and Germany.
The PS5 SSD FAQ page is quite detailed and lists the various things users need to know when it comes to upgrading their PS5 storage. It explains what an M.2 SSD is, the benefits of using one and the various requirements a user should keep in mind when purchasing a new SSD for their PS5.

Sony also details these requirements when it comes to the speed, size and dimensions of the SSD. There is also important information to note in regards to the heatsink and installing a storage device with and without one. Keep in mind that this SSD upgrade is a lot more advanced than installing an old-school HDD so you need to take care when handling the console and heatsink.
As for adding the SSD to the PS5, Sony also explains this in detail. This goes from removing the PS5 faceplates to installing the SSD and screwing it in. The web page also mentions the process of moving games and apps to the M.2 storage. According to the listing, once you are on the beta software, a new tab will appear on your games. Users will see the “Items You Can Move to M.2 SSD storage” tab.
It is also important to note that once you have a new M.2 SSD in your PS5, games can be played from the storage directly, downloaded to the storage and also updated. However, Sony does clearly state that in rare circumstances, certain games might not load as fast as they would usually load on the PS5 internal storage. This is due to the hardware being faster inside the PS5 SSD thanks to its custom controller. We doubt these load times will be drastically different though.
So while most of us won’t be able to experience this M.2 SSD expansion until it is out of beta, the web page does give us an idea of how the feature is going to work. Keep in mind that there are still very limited SSDs out there that meet the requirements set out by Sony. One of which is the Seagate FireCuda 530.
