The Sony Spider-Man universe of movies, which consists of Venom, Morbius, Madame Web and the upcoming Kraven The Hunter, is reportedly done. This follows the first reviews for Kraven The Hunter which currently sit at 15% on RottenTomatoes, making it one of the lowest-rated movies of the year.
According to The Wrap, a leading talent agent told the outlet that Sony has “developed what they want to develop for now” and has instead shifted its attention to the next MCU Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland, which begins filming in early 2025. This isn’t exactly a confirmation that Sony’s Spider-Man universe is dead but it honestly sounds like the studio is done with it, at least for now, after a string of poorly received movies.
This year alone, Sony released Venom: The Last Dance which also bombed with critics. Last year, Madame Web was a critical and commercial failure and the year before that, the internet collectively trolled Sony into re-releasing Morbius, one of the worst-rated comic book movies of all time.
Sony’s idea to build a universe of spin-off movies based on Spider-Man villains and adversaries sounds great on paper, though despite strong box office rakings for the first two Venom movies, most audiences agreed that they lacked a key ingredient: Spider-Man.
Kraven The Hunter is out tomorrow in cinemas, marking the next (and presumably final) outing in Sony’s Spider-Man universe. Early reviews haven’t been too kind to the movie, calling it excessively violent and one of the worst movies of the year. That said, if you’ve been eager to see a live-action version of one of Spider-Man’s most notorious villains, you might have a bit of fun with it. The plot description reads:
“Kraven’s complex relationship with his ruthless father, Nikolai Kravinoff, starts him down a path of vengeance with brutal consequences, motivating him to become not only the greatest hunter in the world, but also one of its most feared.”
