It seems that before Insomniac Games worked on Marvel’s Spider-Man, Ratchet and Clank, and poured countless resources and hours into developing a now-cancelled live-service multiplayer Spider-Man game, the studio actually wanted to develop a new Resistance game.
According Insomniac Games’ Ted Price, Resistance 4 was originally pitched to Sony as a “wonderful concept” but due “timing and market opportunity” it was turned down.
During an interview with Kinda Funny Games, soon-to-be president of Insomniac Games Ted Price said that many team members at the studio were passionate about extending the story further in the Resistance series. Price believed that the studio had already set up a cool alternate history base where anything can happen with the Chimera, where they go and what their origins are.
Price hints that Resistance 4 was inspired by the Chimera backstory and the pitch for the sequel was mostly tied to how the series would move forward while exploring the alien race.
“We did pitch that one and it was a wonderful concept, and, it just, in terms of timing and market opportunity, didn’t work out. But it was the result of a lot of Insomniac team members being passionate about extending the story further because I do believe that Resistance has set up a really cool alternate history base where anything can happen with the Chimera and where they go and what their origins are.”
Ted Price was creative director on two of the three main Resistance games. During the interview, he expressed his love for the franchise saying that it will always remember the good and bad moments that came up during development.
Resistance is one of the many dormant IPs from PlayStation which haven’t seen the light of day in over a decade – apart from a cameo in Astro Bot, of course.
