Firesprite, the first-party developer under PlayStation Studios, has just confirmed a round of layoffs. The studio previously developed The Playroom for PS4 before being acquired by Sony a few years later, where it developed the PS VR2 exclusive, Horizon: Call of the Mountain. These layoffs follow the widespread job cuts at Sony from back in February this year.
“Like several other teams across SIE and PlayStation Studios, Firesprite was impacted by redundancies announced in February of this year,” Firesprite confirmed in a recent message posted on Twitter/X. Earlier this year, Sony laid off 900 employees across its gaming divisions including Insomniac Games, Guerrilla Games and Naughty Dog. It turns out that Firesprite was one of the studios also impacted by the layoffs.
The studio goes on to state:
“These past few months have been an incredibly challenging period for our studio whilst we underwent a difficult and lengthy consultation process. During this time, we have been focused on providing support to all those affected amidst these demanding circumstances. As the consultation period now draws to a close, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to all of the incredible and talented colleagues who will always remain a part of our story. We face the future with resilience and determination, united in our vision to deliver unforgettable gaming experiences to our players.”

Following the layoffs, Sony apparently cancelled multiple projects that were in development at various PlayStation Studios. One confirmed game was a live service Twisted Metal title that was in development at Firesprite before the project got shut down. Sony’s London Studio, which had developed the SingStar series and recent VR titles like Blood and Truth, was closed down. It was reportedly working on a new co-op fantasy RPG that was in development since 2022. Unfortunately it’s no longer in the works.
