Sony doesn’t have a problem selling consoles. The latest numbers show the PS5 is ahead by almost 20 million units compared to the Xbox Series X/S.
VG Chartz predicts that Sony is currently sitting on 42 million console sales for the PlayStation 5 whereas the total Xbox Series X/S sales are only ar 23 million.

Sony’s gap is also increasing over Microsoft’s console as in the last 12 months alone, the PS5 has outsold the Xbox Series X/S by 11.5 million units. This brings Sony 18.9 million units ahead of the Xbox.
We are now 34 months into the current generation of consoles and Sony’s 2023 plan to increase the supply of the PS5 has resulted in an ever-growing gap between Xbox. In August, Sony sold 963k more PS5 consoles than Xbox units.
Total PS5 sales are also right behind PS4 sales when it comes to the same duration on the market. Sony is only 500k units shy of surpassing the PS4 during its same time on the market.
Of course, this isn’t factoring in the Nintendo Switch which continues to dominate despite its dated hardware. Nintendo has almost hit 130 million units sold since its launch back in 2017. However, the Switch has spanned across two generations of consoles now so this number is expected.
Back in August, Nintendo surpassed its previous record-breaking console, the Nintendo Wii. The console sold 106 million units during its time on the market.
With the launch of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 this month and the holiday season approaching, we will likely see a jump in PS5 sales. Microsoft is looking to refresh the Xbox Series X/S line in 2023 with new slimmer models. However, the company’s recent leaks revealing the information might hold people back from picking up the console until such a time.
