Wakanda forever? South African businessman, MK Malefane, reportedly wants to make the fictional city featured in the Black Panther film and Avengers: Infinity War, a reality. This is obviously a very ambitious project and one that will obviously create a tonne of jobs and attract tourists from across the globe.
Nelson Mandela Bay is intended as the site for the Wakanda-themed amusement park and that is pretty awesome for me as I live in the area. This news comes from City Press, which notes that the project will be a “state-of-the-art cinema and amusement park complex”, resembling Disney World in the US, with one big difference, a “strict emphasis on African creativity”. The project is reportedly in its developmental phase and many details are yet to be confirmed.
Malefane reportedly explained to City Press that:
Should the project location be officially established in Nelson Mandela Bay – with its diversified investment and development projects that include manufacturing and agro-processing – the current levels of poverty and unemployment in the area will become a thing of the past.
This project could obviously be a massive draw for tourists across the globe and see Port Elizabeth become one of the hottest destinations in the country. Since the release of Black Panther, it was a little strange to hear people talking about Wakanda as if it was a real place and wanted to go visit it. Well, if Malefane’s dreams come true, that will be exactly what they could do.
Mr Malefane reportedly further explained that:
We plan to also recreate the city of Wakanda … We are working with the best in this industry, including the team that built most of the Disney theme parks worldwide.
One of the potential locations for this development in Nelson Mandela Bay is on a prime site measuring 6 000ha and with a 10km coastal and beachfront expanse.
For those readers that didn’t know, I actually live just 40 minutes from the area in Port Elizabeth that has been proposed as the site for the Wakanda-themed amusement park, so if the project does get underway, I will be sure to visit and keep you up to date with the progress.
