Disney is once again raising the price of its Disney Plus streaming service in the United States. Starting on 17 October, Disney Plus will go up by $2 for the American ad tier and @$2 for the ad-free tier. Subscribers can purchase the annual ad tier for $140 and the ad-free tier for $160.
This marks the fourth price hike for Disney Plus since the service launched in the US. But Disney is adding new services to the platform at the same time. ABC News Live launches on 4 September alongside a new curated playlist channel that includes content from across the Disney-owned platforms.
Disney+ will launch a playlist for preschool-aged audiences, with additional categories planned for Seasonal, Epic Stories, Throwbacks, and Real Life.
These playlists are Disney’s latest attempt to get viewers to watch any content without them sorting through menus trying to find something to watch. It is a low-effort way of selecting a playlist and watching whatever the platform gives you. Disney already detailed this feature a while back saying it would deliver a “live TV” experience.
Thankfully, this Disney Plus price hike has skipped the Hotstar regions. In South Africa, our last price increase was in June 2023 when the service went from R129 to R139. Given the Disney Plus platform is half the experience here with HD content and no surround sound support, our pricing sort of aligns with the quality.
