The Nintendo Switch 2 is officially available in South Africa. The 5 June release date marks the console’s global rollout as fans finally get their hands on the much-leaked hardware. The Nintendo Switch 2 retails from R12,499 in South Africa.
The cold winter evening didn’t stop eager fans from flocking to the Nintendo Branded Store in Sandton City to grab their console at midnight. The store hosted a launch and invited customers to attend. You could either collect a pre-order or simply wait in line to purchase a Switch 2 console as the clock rolled over to 5 June.
Surprisingly enough, more customers ended up standing in line for the console than collecting a pre-order. Many of the attendees at the launch decided to brave the queue instead of being a “priority” and securing their unit beforehand.
If anything, it brought back those memories of the good old days standing outside BT Games waiting for God of War 3’s launch at midnight.
The store at least provided some entertainment as guests were able to participate in a trivia quiz that spanned the Nintendo brand. Fans had to try and remember when the company was founded and at times, what music tune was from what game.
If you haven’t picked up your Nintendo Switch 2 console, there is seemingly plenty of stock available in the country to do so. Speaking to Core representatives at the launch, they are confident the supply will meet the demand when it comes to the console itself. However, accessories are in short supply. The Carrying Case & Screen Protector is currently sold out. MicroSD Express cards are also running low.
With that being said, the store says accessory stock will be replenished within the next two weeks so you’ll be able to pick up a carrying case soo, but there are some third-party ones available. I did spot Nintendo Switch 2 screen protectors for sale at the store too (albiet quite expensive). While these can’t be purchased online (not at the time of writing anyway), you can get a tempered glass protector at the store in Sandton – a seemingly simple add-on which is in short supply.
