For the fourth week in a row, Marvel’s Captain Marvel is proving her popularity by topping the South African box office top 10. This first female-lead Marvel movie has been able to beat out new releases like Disney’s live-action Dumbo which was directed by Tim Burton, as well as the new horror movie, Us directed by Jordan Peele.

Captain Marvel is also the highest grossing movie currently on the South African box office top 10, earning R 38 927 504 domestically to date.

Now, let’s get to the top 10 movies at the box office for the weekend of 29 to 31 March 2019 in South Africa.

10. Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral

About to leave the South African box office top 10, is Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral. The family’s back together, but things are not what they seem and soon turns into a hilarious madness. The movie sees Tyler Perry reprising his role as Madea and Cassi Davis and Patrice Lovely join the cast, too.

9. Fighting With My Family

Fighting With My Family is a true story following the lives of a family trying to make a living from wrestling together. The family’s two children, Paige (portrayed by Florence Pugh) and Zak (portrayed by Jack Lowden) get an opportunity to try out for WWE, which sets off a sweet and hilarious story about the bonds of family. Nick Frost and Lena Heady also star in this movie which debuted on the South African box office two weeks ago.

8. How To Train Your Dragon: Hidden Worlds

Still holding on to a spot on the South African box office is the third instalment in the How To Train Your Dragon franchise. Dean DeBlois returns to direct, with Jay Baruchel returning to voice Hiccup and America Ferrera voices the role of Astrid.

7. Hotel Mumbai

Making its South African box office top 10 debut this week is Hotel Mumbai. This thriller was directed by Anthony Maras and is based on the 2008 Mumbai attacks at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel in India.

Another South African box office top 10 debut is Jordon Peele’s new horror Us. This twisted tale stars Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke. If you love to be scared and freaked out by movies, then this one is for you.

5. Cold Pursuit

Liam Neeson stars in this action movie which made its South African box office top 10 debut last week at number 3. Someone made the mistake of messing with Liam Neeson’s on-screen son, and after his son is murdered, he seeks revenge.

4. What Men Want

Not moving from its number 4 spot on the South African box office top 10, is this gender-swap remake of the 2000 movie What Women Want. The movie stars Taraji P. Henson and Tracy Morgan. It held the top spot for two weeks in a row before it was dethroned by the Captain Marvel movie, which has now been dominating the South African box office top spot for four consecutive weeks.

3. Wonder Park

Moving down from its number 2 spot which it held on to for 2 weeks in a row, Wonderpark now moves down to hold the number 3 spot on the South African box office top 10. This sweet family-friendly film follows the story of June (voiced by Brianna Denski) who tries to save an amusement park.

Not managing to dethrone Captain Marvel for the top spot, Dumbo soars into the South African box office at number 2. This live-action adaptation of the classic Disney movie stars Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, and Danny DeVito.

The Captain Marvel movie stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel and was directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck and has held the top spot in South Africa for a fourth consecutive week. The movie is set to surpass $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales.
